In the suitcase of Louise Barile, bookseller

Since February, this graduate of a Master’s in Book Trade has been working in the Athenaeum’s general bookshop. For our latest summer newsletter, she opens up her holiday suitcase to you…

Which novel will you be taking with you this summer?

Sally and Liss couldn’t be more different. Sally has just run away from home at the age of seventeen. Anorexic, she blames the whole world. The second, in her fifties, works alone on the farm, in the silence of the fields and vineyards. By offering Sally hospitality, Liss unknowingly opens a door to her life. Sally, for her part, finds in Liss a refuge she had never known…

« A beautiful novel about the relationship between two women, simple and pure. Enjoy it on the beach or with a cup of tea!«

Will any guidebooks, recipe books or other ‘practical’ books be included?

10 walks for walking enthusiasts, cycling itineraries, video clips, audio tracks, geolocated sites and addresses… The new edition of this essential guide offers a thousand and one ways to explore Brittany in depth.

« You don’t change a winning team: Brittany remains a destination that I adore and never tire of! Even more so with this original guide in hand, which is sure to give you plenty of ideas!«

What bottles of wine would you recommend your family and friends to drink this summer?

Produced in the Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune and Maranges regions, this wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Aligoté and Gamay grown on clay-limestone soils with a south-westerly exposure. Vinification follows the traditional method, with hand-picking and full malolactic fermentation. Aged in bottle for 18 to 24 months, this Crémant de Bourgogne reveals complex aromas and remarkable typicity, offering a refined, well-balanced tasting experience.

« I admit to having a preference for Crémant, this one in particular. Perfect as an aperitif, but also to accompany your meal!«

Which bottles would you like to (re)discover?

A brilliant golden colour, subtle aromas of white flowers, white-fleshed fruit and light mineral notes… On the palate, this wine is beautifully fresh, with a silky texture and a long, elegant finish. Ideal with seafood, grilled fish or soft cheeses.

« Tasted on my birthday, I have fond memories of this white Saint-Romain! A great value, to be enjoyed with family and friends!«

What accessories do you always take with you?

Made from quilted cotton, this 45x45x15 cm bag features a unique floral print, handmade in Jaipur, India. With a shoulder strap and inside pocket, it combines traditional craftsmanship and elegance to perfection.

« A big, pretty Indian bag that I use every day! Perfect for carrying your stack of books as well as your bottle of wine!«
