In the suitcase of Bruno de Bona, wine merchant

A sommelier in London for 10 years, this distinguished guitarist and music enthusiast has joined Athenaeum in 2019. He, in turn, opens his suitcase to you, as part of our special Summer newsletter series…

Which novel will you be taking with you this summer?

Readers of Jim Harrison are familiar with his devouring passion for good food and fine wine. Few, however, appreciate the extent of his writings on the subject. Gathered together for the 1st time in a single volume, these articles sketch the self-portrait of the famous vagabond gourmand and offer a veritable literary feast.

A fan of American literature, starting with Jim Harrison’s Dalva, I didn’t know until I met François Busnel and saw his documentary on this writer that he was a great lover of Burgundy wines, among other things, and of good food!

Will any guidebooks, recipe books or other ‘practical’ books be included?

Beautifully illustrated, this book presents a careful selection of the world’s most exceptional vineyards, from Japan to Argentina and from South Africa to France. You’ll find advice on how to visit these wine-growing regions, the history of these places and, of course, all the best places to taste the best wines.

I’d already read 150 bars you need to visit before you die. I wanted to discover this new opus to give me an idea of the next vineyards to visit!

What bottles of wine would you recommend your family and friends to drink this summer?

Made from the Babic grape variety, this wine is characterised by intense aromas of red fruit, spices and a touch of minerality. Matured with indigenous yeasts and no added sulphites, it offers a pure expression of the Dalmatian terroir, with fine tannins and a lovely freshness on the palate, reflecting Vinas Mora’s commitment to natural winemaking.

I fell in love with this wine straight away. It has a very Pinot Noir feel to it, with its great sapidity and freshness… All the more reason for me to revisit Croatia, after a wonderful holiday on the island of Vis.’

Which bottles would you like to (re)discover?

A very successful excursion by Marthe Henry to the Côte Chalonnaise, with this luminous, elegant Chardonnay, with notes of white flowers and citrus fruit, coupled with a subtle woody touch that gives the wine a lovely patina.

I love Marthe Henry’s wines. They are always very elegant, pure and ready to drink… The pleasure is immediate.

What accessories do you always take with you?
